Welcome to Science Fair! Here is a brief guide that will help to make sure you follow correct procedure and gather all of the important forms you will need in order to compete at the Simcoe County Regional Science and Technology Fair. If you do not follow this protocol you will not be able to compete, no exceptions. Please read carefully and consult Youth Science Canada website ( youthscience.ca ) for further information. Also please be aware that plants, dirt, mould, bacteria, petrie dishes and more than 1 litre of liquid are not allowed at the fair. You may experiment with them but you may not bring them to the fair. You may use photos, videos, or creative alternatives to create your display.
If you are testing on people, even questionnaires, you must follow these important steps.
Is your proposed project low risk or significant risk?
Low Risk: involves conditions where the risks of harm are not greater or more likely than those encountered in everyday life. Low Risk Projects are limited to:
- Some surveys
- Some food and drink projects
- Some absorption through the skin projects
- Some exercise projects

Significant Risk: are all projects that are not low risk.
If it is Low Risk, follow these steps
- Choose your project.
- Read all the rules for Human Participation – Low Risk projects
- Find your Adult Supervisor.
- Provide Informed Consent to all your participants.
- Get the Informed Consent Permission form signed by all your participants.
- Carry out your research.
- Get Form 4.1A signed.
If it is Significant Risk, follow these steps.
- Choose your project.
- Read all the rules for Human Participation – Significant Risk projects
- Find your Adult Supervisor.
- Find your Scientific Supervisor, who may also be your Adult Supervisor.
- Prepare your Research Plan, and get it approved BEFORE you start your experiments
- Provide Informed Consent to all your participants.
- Get the Informed Consent Permission form signed by all participants.
- Carry out your research.
- Get Form 4.1B signed.

3. Find your Adult Supervisor.
4. Find your Scientific Supervisor, who may be your Adult Supervisor.
5. Write your Research Proposal
6. Get it approved BEFORE you start your experiments.
7. Carry out your research.
8. Get Form 4.1C signed.
